Traveling and medicines .
Needless to say, many people travel all year round nowadays. But, in summer the question about what medicines to take for traveling, becomes so much more frequent. The pharmacist is always ready to help catering to your needs, whether it is a short or long holiday, a trip to a nearby country or to a faraway exotic one. Sometimes the enjoyment of your vacation will be dependent on your medicines travel kit.
If you are taking any prescription only medicines, it is very important that you pack these in their original, clearly labeled packaging and have the prescription or a covering letter by your doctor. This would ensure that you do not have any issues at airport security.
Your medicines travel kit should be well stocked with items which cover minor ailments like stomach upsets, heartburn, sunburn, motion sickness, diarrhea, vomiting, allergies, insect bites and skin grazes.
In case of any type of pain or fever, you will need paracetamol or ibuprofen. An ice pack and a hot pack can also be useful if you have the space in your luggage. Besides the usual plasters and hydrocolloid foot blister plasters, a bandage can be a life savour for a sprain or injury.
The change in diet when traveling often causes constipation for which you will need a laxative. But in case you have diarrhea, you will need an antidiarrhoeal, oral rehydration salts and probiotics. For some countries, it is recommended that you take probiotics everyday because the drinking water could be contaminated and thus can cause diarrhea. Antacids are important for heartburn, especially if your holiday is either a culinary one or you plan to eat unfamilar heavy fatty foods or junk food.
Antihistamines are important for any type of allergy. But in the case of bug bites, the additional use of an after bite gel always helps soothe the itching too. Between splashing sunblock and aloe vera for sunburn, it is important not to forget the DEET based insect repellent, especially if you are visiting forests or swamps. Melatonin and magnesium are effective supplements which help not only with jet lag but also with insomnia or for anyone looking forward to a restful sleep while on holiday, away from the daily hectic work life.
So plan your medicines travel kit with your pharmacis and enjoy a peaceful holiday!
